The City of Iqaluit is going ahead with plans for a new gravel source. The city is developing what it calls the interim travel area gravel source located 1.3 km past the top of the upper base road. There's enough gravel there to last 10 to 12 years and 5 km further there's another source of gravel that contains enough to last decades. Right now the city's gravel source is the north 40 area where there are concerns about contamination. This week the city's consultants met with local contractors and the various regulators like the Nunavut Water Board. And a public meeting was held this week as well but nobody attended. The city's engineering manager Jeff Baker says they're assuming residents don't have big concerns about the project.
“It could have been a situation where it was just a bad night. There were some other events being held in the city at the same time. For the most part that tells me that there aren't huge issues with this development and maybe most of the residents prefer that we push through to another gravel source rather than removing gravel from a contaminated site.”Baker says the city will be moving forward with construction of an access road during the 2007 construction season. It's also going through the regulatory process with the water board, the Nunavut Impact Review Board, and various federal government departments. Baker hopes there will be full access to the new gravel source by the end of July. |
